Objective: To identify the effect of the Danjeon Breathing Exercise on stress urinary incontinence and quality of life (QoL) in middle-aged women.
Methods: The research design was a nonequivalent control group pretest-posttest design. The data were collected from April, 27, 2005 to August, 10, 2005. The subjects were 37 middle-aged women with stress urinary incontinence who were divided into an experimental group (19) and a control group (18). All of the subjects were examined for general characteristics, degree of stress urinary incontinence and QoL by using a questionnaire. The Danjeon Breathing Exercise program consists of three 80-minute sessions per week over 12 weeks.
Results: The degree of stress urinary incontinence was significantly decreased and QoL was significantly increased in the experimental group compared to the control group.
Conclusions: The Danjeon Breathing Exercise is effective for decreasing the degree of stress urinary incontinence and for increasing QoL. Therefore, the Danjeon Breathing Exercise is an effective nursing intervention for stress urinary incontinence and QoL in middle-aged women.
